About Denver & the Mile High Orchestra
It’s impossible to completely know Denver & The Mile High Orchestra without ever feeling the force of the group’s power-packed sound while brass horns flash back and forth, swinging to an infectious retro beat right in front of your eyes.
A one-of-a-kind ensemble amidst the landscape of today’s Christian music scene, Denver first assembled his musician friends to reinvent the big band style—which had long intrigued him—while attending Nashville’s Belmont University in 1999. Today, this exceptional group of artists is comprised of three trumpet players, three saxophone players, two trombone players and a rhythm section.
In the six years since the group’s inception, DMHO has traveled around the globe, performing at churches, conferences and festivals—taking its electrifying horn-driven sound to the masses. Career highlights for the band include performances at two Olympics—Salt Lake City’s Winter Games in 2002 and the Summer Games in Athens, Greece, in 2004—and the group was also featured as the house band for the 2005 GMA Music Awards.
If audience response and impact is the ultimate litmus test of success, this is one band that’s having more than their share. “Some people have told me, ‘Man, this cannot work. This will never fly in the industry. You’re crazy. Go home.’ But nothing could be further from what our audiences are saying,” Denver says. “I’ve had people who normally don’t go to church or listen to Christian music come to our concert and say, ‘Hey, I love what you’re doing here. I’ll be thinking about what you said.’”
Encouraging comments like this were precisely the catalyst for DMHO to create Live At Long Hollow and the live CD Live! It Up. The impact and energy of the group’s unique brand of big band music is simply the vehicle, they humbly realize, for a message that transcends formats. Whether it’s shared in a live concert setting or at home via a DVD or CD recording, it’s the most important message Denver and the band want the world to hear, believe—and now see.
“God has taken the music and done something with it that’s bigger than any plan I could’ve had for us,” Denver relates. “That’s all the motivation and all the success I need.”
With a nearly non-stop touring schedule each year, audiences across the country can attest firsthand to the excitement of a live Denver & The Mile High Orchestra event. And with three studio recordings and a Christmas album under their belt, it only made sense for Christian music’s premier big band to now capture both the sonic and visual elements of their high-energy stage show for home audiences in the form of a live concert DVD and CD. Live At Long Hollow, and its accompanying CD, Live! It Up, recorded at bandleader and group founder Denver Bierman’s home church outside Nashville, pulls out all the stops to showcase the ensemble’s musical buffet of swing, jazz, pop, R&B and funk, all rolled-up into one captivating big band package.
Featuring DMHO originals like “The Real Deal,” “Act The Scat” and “Get Down,” this recorded concert also includes the band’s unique spin on such hymns as “All Hail the Power” and “It Is Well.” In addition to the14 live cuts, the DVD contains a bonus disc of bonus features such as an interview with Denver, behind the scenes footage, and five additional acoustic performances.
“There’s just something about our sound and style that puts a smile on your face,” Denver says. “And when we play live, there’s so much energy when the horns are blaring in the aisles and people of all ages are clapping. We’re all in it together, and people really need that.”
The high entertainment factor is a given with D&MHO’s live events, but the band’s top priority is their message. “When people are entertained, they are able to let their guard down, to let go of their preconceived notions about Christianity,” Denver continues. “And that’s when God speaks to them about what’s really at the heart of their lives. All we try to do is create a warm and inviting environment that makes it easier for people to respond to Him. Our job is just to keep moving forward and make sure He gets all the glory.
